Shaltearan Brotherhood [shal-tear-in]:
The Shaltearan Brotherhood is the most highly feared assassin’s guild in all Doljinaar. They employ cloak and dagger tactics, exotic weaponry and adhere to a grisly code of ethics called the Assassin’s Codex. They tattoo their flesh with symbols that mark the tally counts of their kills to ascend ranks and delve deeper into the arts of stealth, death and murder. Some say they are deadlier than even the legendary Unseen.

Cloak [cloak]:
A Cloak is the guild’s demeaning, but forthright take on fresh recruits. They are called Cloaks since the Shaltearan simply puts a dagger in the hands of an untrained citizen and throws a cloak over their shoulders. They are untrained killers to find out which recruits have ice in their veins. Still, Cloaks present some danger as they can be anyone: man, woman or child. The Shaltearan Brotherhood recruits large numbers of Cloaks to throw at the small contracts. This is pure business. The nature of their work will weed out the real killers.

Recruit [re-crewt]:
The Cloaks must complete 10 contracts before being accepted into the guild and earning the title of recruit. For every kill they earn another mark on their body from the Assassin's Codex. The recruiters spread the recruits over the guildhalls in the kingdom, sending the cream of the crop to train under the Shaltearan Elite in Capital Doljinaar. Being chosen to train at the capital is considered the highest honor.

Assassin [a-sass-in]:
Recruits train under trainers and then undergo the trials where they pit the strongest against one another. The survivors are given their first real contracts and they must prove themselves by completing their first 100 kills. Only after the 100 kills are completed do they ascend to the first rank of the Assassin's Codex and earn the title of assassin. They continue to have their bodies tattooed for every kill.

Recruiter [re-crew-ter]:
Assassins continue their careers ascending through many ranks for every one hundred kills. Their bodies become works of art as every kill earns them a new symbol. At 500 kills an assassin ascends to the 5th rank and they can become recruiters if they are interested in building the guild. Recruiters are used to recruit Cloaks in all the major cities. Of course, many assassins ignore this role and continue to take out contracts to ascend higher levels of the Assassin's Codex.

Trainers [tray-ners]:
At the 6th rank, or after 600 kills, a Shaltearan may become a trainer. Trainers are utilized to train new recruits and beat some into assassins. Trainers at times take the lives of weaker recruits to make a point the potential and increase their drive. Trainers at times must complete contracts that their pupils have failed. Of course, assassins still wanting to climb the codex may also ignore this position.

Master Assassin [mass-ter as-sass-in]:
At the 9th rank, or after 900 kills, the Shaltearan earns the title of Master Assassin. He earns a place of high honor and a spot at the Sensei Council. He is called Sensei. The council is the Shalton's most trusted advisers, but he must also watch them carefully. The Way of the Blackhand demands that the deadliest Shaltearan shall always have conrol of the guild, so his own council members present the greatest danger to him.

Shalton [shall-ton]:
The Shalton is the guildmaster of the Shaltearan Brotherhood. He has assumed his position by becoming the most dominant Master Assassin by attaining over 1,000 kills. The Shalton has the final say in all matters of the guild. The Shalton must constantly watch his back because his position can be seized by any other Master Assassin after he has attained over 1,000 kills. Once a rival Master Assassin attains 1,000 kills he is given the ceremonial black dagger by which he may assasinate the Shalton at anytime and assume command of the guild if suceeds. The seizing of the position in the guild is called the Way of the Blackhand, named after their deity King Shaltear who attained godhood by shedding the blood of an ancient king of Doljinaar.
